All students will be under varying amounts of stress throughout their school/college career, and it is important that they receive both the practical and emotional help to ensure they achieve their potential.
It is also important to remember that everyone learns and performs best in their own way. Some students retain more information by making a lot of notes and re-reading, while other may only need to do short bursts of more 'hands-on' learning. No one way is more suitable than the other, as long as it works!
There are many ways you can support your son/daughter through exams and deadlines and a few are listed below:
Coursework:
- Ask the school to provide you with as much information as possible regarding topics that will need to be covered and any deadlines
- Help your son/daughter to draw up a schedule/timetable for the piece of work
- Look up relevant websites on the subject and suggest your son/daughter does the same
- Suggest making a start on any coursework as soon as it is received whilst it is still fresh in the mind
- Set up an area at home for your son/daughter to work in - without any distractions
- Ensure they take regular breaks to keep them alert
- Encourage them to ask for help!
Revision:
- Again, help your son/daughter to draw up a realistic revision timetable
- Set up a suitable work area with no distraction
- Ask the school to provide a selection of past papers to aid revision
- Ensure your son/daughter has a healthy balance of social time and revision time
- Ensure your son/daughter eats a healthy diet throughout the exam period as this will allow them to absorb information more easily and remain alert
- Praise regularly with rewards
- Again, encourage to ask for help!
