On a beautiful day in June 40 year 9 students spent the day at Birmingham University on a Taster Day aimed at raising student aspirations to go on to higher education. The programme included a number of activities and had a science flavour. The first activity required the students to work in teams with youngsters from other schools to build and race a motor powered kit car. They found this very challenging and they were marked on their ability to operate as a team as well as the quality of the finished product.
After racing their cars the students went on a campus tour which they found a real eye opener. The atmosphere around the campus was very relaxed as the undergraduates had just finished their examinations and were enjoying the sunshine for the last few days before their end of year balls and finishing for the summer. Many of the year 9 students felt inspired to go to university as a result of their experience on this visit and many students said they would like to go to Birmingham in particular.
