The students are now in year 6 so their transition up to secondary school is now even closer. The aim of these ‘Passport to University’ days was to get students feeling a little more confident about the transition and to either build or develop confidence in their ability to make new friends and work with new people.
Each of the activities was designed specifically to encourage students to work with new people, to address some of the stereotypes that surround HE, and to allow students to get their own questions answered, all in a positive and supportive environment.
As it has been a few months since we last saw the students we kicked the day off with a recall and recap quiz that got everyone to think back to work we have previously done around introducing the concept of FE and HE and overcoming barriers to students’ goals.
We then got everyone working in pairs, in most cases with people they had never met on activities such as ‘Ask and Ambassador,’ ‘Create your Typical Student,’ and ‘Whacky Races!’ The students responded brilliantly and got engaged in all of the activities.
Students also had a taster of 2 university subjects to introduce them to new ways of learning and just a sample of the subjects on offer at HE.
We all now look forward to our next sessions in February 2010.
Staff that attended the days said:
“Excellent encouragement to break barriers!”
“I feel they opened up their mind to further education.”
“All my children were smiling and enthusiastic. They were all completely engaged in all the activities.”
“One of the best days I have had with year 6. A fantastic opportunity for children. Keep up the good work!”
When asked about how the day will assist students’ transition to secondary school:
“I fell they will be less afraid.”
Students said:
“I feel confident about meeting new friends at my secondary school.”
“I feel I have learnt to be more confident and brave about things.”
“I have learnt that there are lots of choices of jobs.”
“I have met new people and I have worked as a team.”
“That uni is gigantic and we had lots of fun.”
