2010 Summer Schools

What Happened at the 2010 Summer Schools?

It was a long hard winter for the summer school team so we decide to make summer schools EVEN BIGGER for 2010!

Find out more about what went on at each of the Summer Schools ...

Bodies, Bones & Blood (Tuesday 6th - Saturday 10th July 2010) Year 9

Aspire (Tuesday 13th – Saturday 17th July 2010) Year 10

Discover Uni (Tuesday 20th to Saturday 23rd July 2010) Year 9

Summer Schools 2010

As schools and students were winding down for their summer break the Aimhigher summer school team were frantically preparing and running three action packed weeks for over 100 year 9 and year 10 students from across Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire and Rutland. Like last year Bodies, Bones & Blood and Aspire were back with a bang but this year also saw a new addition to the summer school family in the form of Discover Uni.

The summer schools are an opportunity for students to experience what being at university is all about and are crammed full of team building activities, legendary themed parties and trips to Lazer Zone and an outdoor education centre. However higher education is not all about fun, fun, fun! Students worked extremely hard during the week on a number of interactive project sessions ranging from Animal Welfare at Moulton College to Performance Studies at the University of Northampton. All of which meant that both students and staff went home with some amazing memories.

Summer Schools 2010

As always with summer schools students arrived feeling a bit nervous but as the days progressed these nerves are soon forgotten and a whole host of other fears are challenged such as fear of heights, water and getting out of bed on time! Students also had the opportunity to participate in a student finance game, an origami and learning style master class courtesy of The University of the First Age. They also took part in a circus skills workshop in which they learnt how to juggle and walk on stilts, although not at the same time.

As if all that were not enough students also got a real insight into the advantages of continuing their studies post 16 and some of the options available to them.

Summer Schools 2010

As each summer school drew to an end students put the finishing touches to presentations which they then performed to a large audience of family and friends. As always the standard of presentations was extremely high with an exciting combination of puppet shows, magic tricks and some brilliant power point presentations. Of course no student’s time at University would be complete without a graduation cere-mony and summer schools are no different. Every student had their hard work recognised and were presented with a certificate for them to keep as they officially graduated from the summer schools.

The summer school team wish all students the very best of luck in the future.

And remember, you only get out from summer schools what you put in!

Simon and the Summer School team.
